Essays I intend to be rather tentative, at least at first, in publishing my essays on this site. I am thinking of naming this portion "The Contrarian," because I hope to please some of the people none of the time, and all of the people none of the time. My politics are difficult to categorize. I like to think of myself as a liberal, but in the 19th Century use of that term, which would mean that in today's world I might be considered conservative. In the event, neither term fits. The Reading List Page contains some essays of sorts, but not as such. A much more ambitious undertaking, whichI am essaying, is a book/treatise on meta-ethics called NOTES FROM THE OVERSOUL --(Confessions of the Undersoul). I have several chapters finished, but, having a reputation to conceal, I am not ready to publish them all on this site yet. Nevertheless, I am prepared to publish the rather long introduction. Review of the Space Opera Concert 12/22/2002. There is a song that I am very fond of, written by John Perry Barlow and Bob Weir, called "The Music Never Stopped." http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/mns.html It has a stanza which makes me think of a Fort Worth Band that has been around for 30 years: They're a band beyond description That band is Space Opera. Here are some links http://jman5.com/cybercity/091502b.html http://www.frasermusic.com/scottlfraser/works.htm http://www.spaceopera.net/bullock.htm I reviewed a concert they performed at the AARDVARK on 12/28/2002. If you want to read it click here. I have dozens of essays on every subject ranging from contemporary social comment, religion, philosophy, politics, you name it. I recently had the opportunity to email my daughters, the majority of whom are presently in college and are (or were) against the war in Iraq. Because I am very sympathetic to their point of view, but reached a different conclusion, I wrote them several emails, primarily addressed to the one in Italy, who has been almost terrified by the anti-American sentiment of those to whom the welfare of the Iraqis is at the bottom of their agenda, and not risking having their world disturbed is at the very top. I took these emails, and concatenated them together to form one long essay. That is why the structure is not ideal, and why there is some repetitiveness. Also, this is not the type of essay that I would write for a magazine. It is more self-indulgent than that type of essay would be, and so I apologize in advance for the fact that it was not written necessarily to advance a clear point of view, but rather to explore and probe and speculate. Well, it is what it is. It will displease some, and I hope that even those it pleases will find some things objectionable. To see this essay, click here.
